The search has commenced for the next early career visual artist to take up the Create NSW and Artspace 2023 NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging).

The 2023 fellowship program will shortlist up to six artists to receive curatorial support and mentorship from Artspace as they realise works for an exhibition to be held in July 2023 at Carriageworks. The recipient will receive a $30,000 fellowship from the NSW Government to a self-directed program of professional development.

Create NSW Chief Executive, Annette Pitman said the Fellowship, now in its twenty-sixth year, has launched the careers of many NSW emerging visual artists.

“The NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) has been a successful platform for nurturing the immense talent within NSW’s visual arts community, and I’m pleased to welcome applications from the next generation of artists.”

For the first time, Carriageworks will host the Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) exhibition in 2023 as Artspace’s home at The Gunnery in Woolloomooloo undertakes a multi-million redevelopment funded by the NSW Government, transforming it into a landmark multi-platform contemporary art centre with expanded exhibition spaces and increased artist studios.

“I’m excited to see Artspace and Carriageworks collaborate to present the Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) exhibition in 2023, giving these promising artists exposure at one of Sydney’s premier cultural spaces,” Ms Pitman said.

Alexie Glass-Kantor, Executive Director, Artspace said the NSW Visual Arts Fellowship (Emerging) remains a key exhibition for Artspace, reflecting the ongoing commitment to support generations of emerging artists through curatorial development and dialogue.

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Carriageworks to present the 2023 edition and encourage artists of all disciplines to apply for this remarkable professional development opportunity.”

Previous recipients of the Fellowship include Eddie Abd, Dennis Golding, Shivanjani Lal, Claudia Nicholson, Consuelo Cavaniglia, Heath Franco, Ramesh Mario Nithiyendran, Jamie North and Soda Jerk.
