Interview with Dan Goods Visual Strategist, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, NASA – REMIX 2017
Dan Goods is passionate about creating moments in peoples lives where they can interact with something beautiful, meaningful, and/or possibly profound.
During the day he is the “Visual Strategist” for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he shepherds a creative strategy team developing everything from art pieces that expose people to the wonders of the universe, to brainstorming the NASA missions of the future. His work is seen in public spaces, art museums, and is in outer space.
We interviewed Dan ahead of his keynote at the REMIX Sydney Summit 2017.
Your day job involves collaborating with space engineers to translate extremely complex concepts into meaningful stories that can be easily understood by broad audiences. How do you use art and creative thinking to communicate these abstract ideas?
We like to call it “sneaking up on learning”. Developing experiences that are beautiful and captivating and draw you in by asking questions. When you are asking questions you are in the mindset for learning, and when you want to learn, there is more of a chance that you will remember it.
Do you think this work at NASA represents a shift in thinking: bringing art and science together on a level playing field?
It’s great talking with scientists and having an awe for what they do and they having an awe for what i do. we both greatly respect each others abilities and cheer each others successes on. i wouldn’t call it putting them on a level playing ground as much as learning from those you can learn from.
You’re providing a keynote on data, art and technology at REMIX Sydney 2017. Can you tell us more about your keynote address?
There are lots of ways to express information. I really enjoy making it visceral. I’ll give examples, using various senses, and at the end let people see particles that have come from exploded stars.
What do you hope audiences take away from your talk?
Life is short, find something that’s meaningful, that you love, and do it well.
What are you looking forward to seeing at REMIX Sydney? Why is it important to you to be participating in this Conference?
In the end, it’s all about the people. I love hanging out with others who share a passion for doing good work and doing good in the world.
