The NSW Government is proud to be re-opening the Theatre Royal, in partnership with Dexus, which has commenced construction on a $170 million redevelopment to rejuvenate the retail, dining and theatre components of Sydney’s MLC Centre.

Reopening the CBD-based iconic theatre will increase Sydney’s capacity to host new productions and compete on the world-stage for more first-run international tours. A redeveloped Theatre Royal will deliver significant economic benefits to the city through employment and tourism along with contributing to the vibrancy of the city’s night-time economy.

A competitive tender process for a theatre operator, launched by Create NSW in December 2019 was awarded to the Trafalgar Entertainment Group, a premium international production company based on London’s West End who are responsible for acclaimed musicals including The King and I, The Rocky Horror Show and War Horse.

The 55-year sublease awarded to Trafalgar will ensure delivery of high-quality lyric theatre productions in the heart of Sydney’s CBD well into the future.

The theatre, situated within the redeveloped MLC Centre with high-end retail and dining outlets, is currently under construction and is anticipated to reopen to the public from late 2021.
