Powerhouse Parramatta

The design for Powerhouse Parramatta has been selected, following an international design competition which commenced by Create NSW in January 2019.

The bold vision from the architectural team of Moreau Kusunoki (Lead Design Architect) and Genton (Local Design Architect) was chosen to establish the first major museum to be based in Western Sydney.

The competition was organised by Malcolm Reading Consultants for Create NSW and run in accordance with the procurement requirements of the NSW Government, with the endorsement of the Australian Institute of Architects.

The open two-stage competition welcomed Australian and international design teams and strongly encouraged creative and intellectual collaborations between established and emerging talent.

The first stage of the competition attracted 74 submissions from 20 countries, made up of 529 individual firms from five continents. Six international-Australian and Australian teams were shortlisted.

The six finalist teams were:

• AL_A from the United Kingdom and Architectus from Australia
• Bernardes Architecture from Brazil and Scale Architecture from Australia
• BVN Architecture from Australia and Carlo Ratti Associati from Italy
• CHROFI with Reko Rennie, both from Australia
• Moreau Kusunoki from France and Genton from Australia
• Steven Holl Architects from the United States and Conrad Gargett from Australia

A technical panel reviewed the entries from the six finalist teams and produced a report for the Jury. The Jury conducted final interviews on the design with the teams and was unanimous in recommending Moreau Kusunoki and Genton as the winner of the new Powerhouse International Design Competition.

Create NSW, Powerhouse Parramatta and Infrastructure NSW will work with Moreau Kusunoki and Genton to collaboratively develop the design over the next stage of the project.
