2016 Country Art Support Program Success – The Sum of Us
Bringing together nine local collections in the Greater Hume region, The Sum of Us project oversaw artist residencies, professional development, an exhibition at the Albury LibraryMuseum, and an online exhibition courtesy of Regional Art Development Organisation Murray Arts.
The Sum of Us asked local museums to select an item from their collections that best responded to the idea of the ‘quirky domestic’. Each of the objects chosen connected in various ways to stories and histories in the Greater Hume region, which were then interpreted and documented by artists in residence Kate Rotherham (creative writer) and Nina O’Brien (photographer). The resulting works culminated in an exhibition at the Albury LibraryMuseum, and now form a trail across the Albury- Greater Hume area as objects are returned to their collections accompanied by their respective text and photographs for display. The Sum of Us is also available online as a web based exhibition supported by Murray Arts.
As part of the Country Art Support Program, The Sum of Us provided professional development opportunities and collaboration between the resident artists, in the form of research and the training of Collection Managers in writing and documenting stories. Funding for the project was applied for by the Greater Hume Shire Council on behalf of collection owners and participants, including the Albury LibraryMuseum, the Flying Fruit Fly Circus Collection, the Hothouse Theatre Collection, the Jindera Pioneer Museum, the Culcairn Station House Museum, the Wymah Museum, the Holbrook Submarine Museum, the Woolpack Inn Museum and the Headlie Taylor Header Museum in Henty.
